Multani mitti
is a naturally absorbent clay commonly used in facial masks, scalp treatments and other personal-care preparations. Also known as Fuller’s earth, it is particularly valued for its ability to absorb excess surface oil and leave the skin feeling clean and refreshed. However, because it is highly absorbent, it should be used according to your skin type and not allowed to dry excessively on the skin.

1. What Is Multani Mitti?

Multani mitti is a natural clay that is cleaned, dried and ground into a fine powder. Its colour can range from pale beige and cream to yellowish or light brown, depending on its source and mineral composition. The name is associated with Multan, a region historically known for this type of clay.

Today, Multani mitti powder is commonly used in skincare because it can absorb excess oil, dirt and product residue from the skin’s surface.

Multani mitti is often described as Fuller’s earth. However, Fuller’s earth is a broader term that can refer to several naturally absorbent clays. When purchasing it for skincare, choose a product clearly identified as cosmetic grade rather than one intended for industrial use.

2. Multani Mitti Benefits for the Skin

The main Multani mitti benefits are connected to its oil-absorbing and cleansing properties.

2.1. Absorbs excess surface oil:

Multani mitti can absorb excess sebum from the surface of the skin. This makes it particularly suitable for oily and combination skin, especially around areas such as the forehead, nose and chin.

By absorbing surface oil, a Multani mitti face pack can temporarily leave the skin looking less shiny and feeling cleaner. However, the effect is temporary and does not permanently change the amount of oil produced by the skin.

2.2. Removes surface buildup:

Oil, dirt and cosmetic residue may accumulate on the skin throughout the day. When mixed into a paste and rinsed away, Multani mitti can help remove some of this surface buildup.

2.3. Provides mild exfoliation:

The fine particles in the clay may help loosen dead surface cells while the mask is being rinsed away. There is no need to scrub the skin aggressively, as harsh rubbing can cause dryness or irritation.

Multani mitti should mainly be regarded as a cosmetic cleansing ingredient. It should not be promoted as a guaranteed treatment for acne, pigmentation, scars or other skin conditions.

3. How to Make a Multani Mitti Face Pack

A basic Multani mitti face pack can be prepared with only the clay and water or hydrosol.

  1. Add one or two teaspoons of Multani mitti powder to a clean bowl. Gradually mix in enough water or hydrosol to create a smooth paste that can be spread easily without dripping.

  2. Apply a thin, even layer to clean skin, avoiding the eyes, lips and any broken or irritated areas. Leave it on for around five to ten minutes, or until it begins to dry. Rinse it away before the mask becomes completely dry, cracked or uncomfortable.

  3. After rinsing, apply a suitable moisturiser to help prevent the skin from feeling tight.

A face pack containing water should preferably be prepared fresh for each use. It should not be stored for later use unless it has been formulated with a suitable preservative.

4. Multani Mitti Face Packs for Different Skin Types

Multani mitti can be mixed with different ingredients depending on the skin type, although simple formulations are often best.

4.1. For oily skin

Neem powder can be added to multani mitti in face packs intended for oily skin. Mix the powder blend with plain water or a suitable hydrosol. Apply it to oily areas or to the entire face, depending on your skin's tolerance. This combination may also be suitable for acne-prone skin. If the skin becomes irritated, aloe vera gel may be used in place of water.

4.2. For combination skin

Apply multani mitti mixed with vetiver or sandalwood powder or hydrosol to the forehead, nose, chin, and other oily areas. There may be no need to apply it to drier areas, such as the cheeks, unless the treatment is intended for skin brightening.

4.3. For dry skin

Multani mitti can be too absorbent when used alone on dry skin. It may be combined with aloe vera gel, aloe vera powder, or rose petal powder to reduce the drying feel. Even with these additions, it should be used sparingly.

4.4. For sensitive skin

Mix multani mitti with aloe vera gel or aloe vera powder when using it on sensitive skin. Sensitive skin may react to clay masks. Perform a patch test first, use a thin layer and rinse it away immediately if you experience burning, redness or excessive tightness.

Note: Essential oils are not necessary in a Multani mitti face pack. Adding them may increase the risk of irritation, especially on sensitive or already dry skin.

5. How Often Can Multani Mitti Be Used?

People with oily skin may use multani mitti approximately once a week. Those with combination, dry or sensitive skin may prefer to use it less frequently or apply it only to oily areas.

Using the clay too often can remove too much surface oil and leave the skin feeling dry or uncomfortable. The mask should also not be left on until it becomes completely hard, as this may increase the feeling of tightness.

6. Can Multani Mitti Be Used on Hair?

Multani mitti may also be used as a scalp or hair-cleansing pack because it can absorb oil and product buildup.

Mix the powder with enough water to create a thinner paste than a facial mask. Apply it mainly to an oily scalp, leave it on briefly and rinse thoroughly before it dries completely.

Because of its absorbent qualities, Multani mitti may not be suitable for dry, damaged or tightly curled hair. It may leave such hair feeling rough unless it is used carefully and followed with a suitable conditioner.

7. How to Store Multani Mitti Powder

Store Multani mitti powder in a clean, tightly closed container away from moisture, heat and direct sunlight.

Always use a dry spoon when removing the powder. Introducing water into the container may cause the clay to form hard lumps and can increase the risk of contamination.

Natural differences in colour do not necessarily indicate poor quality. However, the powder should not have an unusual smell, visible contamination or signs that moisture has entered the packaging.

Final Thoughts

Multani mitti is a simple and versatile clay that is most suitable for oily and combination skin. Its main benefits come from its ability to absorb excess surface oil, remove buildup and leave the skin feeling clean.

For best results, apply a thin layer, rinse it away before it dries completely and follow with a moisturiser. Those with dry or sensitive skin should use it cautiously and less frequently.
